A new first floor to a bungalow in Tandridge

Charlie Simpson applied to extend his parents’ bungalow upwards to add a whole new floor. The house was on a row of similar bungalows and the council refused permission because the case officer thought the taller house would look out of place on the street.

However, the house was right at the end of the row. It also sits back a little from the building line and was already slightly elevated above its neighbours. We thought it was an excellent candidate for extensions and we submitted, and won, an appeal.

Council case officers do not always look closely at the site circumstances. They are trained that they should not allow upwards extensions to bungalows, where they are on a street of similar bungalows. They don’t like to make exceptions to their rules, but sometimes an exception is justified.
