A single-storey rear extension in Trafford

Mr and Mrs Chung wanted to extend their cramped galley kitchen to create a new family reception area, with a big, open-plan kitchen/living/diner space.

They applied to take advantage of the government’s ‘larger home extension’ scheme, allowing homeowners to extend up to a depth of 6m without needing planning permission. They hired an architect, drew up some plans and applied for prior approval. The council refused permission, saying the extension would cut out their neighbour’s light and be overbearing.

We successfully appealed on their behalf. We prepared a detailed appeal statement that included information on other, similar appeals that had been successful in the area. The appeal inspector agreed with us that the extension was low in height and would not cause any harm to the closest neighbour.
